YaST Source of Installations
Return to Metamorphousthe Home
Adding Sources of Installation to YaST (Yet another System Tool) in SUSE 9.3 & 10.0:
Go to: Kmenu -> System -> YaST (9.3) or Control Center (YaST) (10.0) -> (log in as root) -> Change Source of Installation (9.3) or Installation Sources (10.0) -> Add -> (pick url's protocol from list (i.e., ftp://..., or http://...) or (if adding a local directory choose Local Directory) (ii) -> in the Server and Directory pop-up window, input the main Server Name of mirror (i.e., mirror.mcs.anl.gov) [omit the protocol (e.g., http://), and preceding and succeeding "/" from the Server Name (i.e., /mirror.mcs.anl.gov/]) -> input Directory on Server (i.e., /pub/suse/i386/current/) (i) -> click OK
(i) A preceding or succeeding "/" in the Directory on Server field may or may not interfere with YaST connecting to the mirror, you may have to omit one or both until a connection is made. The double "//" as found in the mirrors below is how YaST returns the mirrors after connection and will not result in further connection complications. SUSE's main mirror is slower than most third-party mirrors and should be avoided, find an alternate mirror that is complete and system specific for your version, processor, and location:
http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/ftp/int_mirrors.html
(ii) A Local Directory can also be added by creating a folder (i.e., /RPMInstalls) and placing it in a system program directory (i.e., /opt or /usr). Place all manually downloaded RPMs in this directory. Repeating the directions above, add the Local Directory. An 'Edit -> Refresh'ing of the Local Directory will be needed for Install and Remove Software to see any RPMs added after creating directory source.
N.B. The 'Refresh' button (Edit -> Refresh (9.3)) is used periodically and when a mirror is suspected of being updated with additions and newer file versions, also after each manual placement of RPMs in the Local Directory source (if used). In openSUSE 10.0, continuing to leave the Refresh button enabled after the initial 'refresh' (as explained), will bring an error pop-up window stating that the mirror has not been refreshed, disabling the Refresh button will solve this issue.
Along with the mirrors given below, local directory images of the original installation media (i.e., DVD, CDROM) can be added, preventing the required media each time additional software is chosen and only found on its installation source. To do this you will need a least 3 - 5 Gb of free disk space; Disable the original media source -> create a Local Directory(ies) (i.e., /dvd; /cd1, /cd2, /cd3. /cd4. /cd5) placed in an external partition or in system software directories locally (i.e., /opt or /usr) -> copy the contents of the media(s) to the directory(ies) -> proceed to add Local Directory as a source(s) as previously explained. Returns for Local Directory source(s) will read as dir:///x .

A simple Find Files/Folders from Kmenu for *.rpm in the /var directory will return all stored RPMs. Some RPMs are temporarily stored in /tmp during and after downloading from a web browser.

Software Management (10.0) or Install and Remove Software (9.3) will be Reading Package Information when opening. This process may take a long time or may even freeze, after creating new installation sources. To resolve this issue, enable one newly created installation source mirror then open Software Management (10.0) or Install and remove Software (9.3), after this process has been completed, close and repeat until all mirrors have been read. 2. Too many mirrors enabled may be confusing when choosing particular software and/or current or downgrading versions. To resolve this issue, enable the mirrors you want when choosing particular software and versions.

Additional sources from 9.3 can be used in 10.0 by adding its source. Most
software for 9.3 can be installed and used in 10.0, however caution
should be used.

A simple Find Files/Folders from Kmenu for *.rpm in the /var directory will return all stored RPMs. Some RPMs are temporarily stored in /tmp during and after downloading from a web browser.
